Update 7/29 5:45pm
More Rumors! Alex Wood speculated in deal with braves. Said to include a SP and RP from them. Wouldn't be surprised to see the young SP flipped in a deal for David Price. More updates soon!
Update 7/29 5:34pm
Report that paperwork is the only thing holding up the deal. Latos is fine, medical problems seem to have to subsided or have been an incorrect rumor. However, new ideas coming in that there is in fact a third team, and that team is the Atlanta Braves. Speculation is that significant players are involved, possibly Joe Johnson, don't think another starter is involved. Check back for updates.
Update 7/29 2:25pm
Sources saying that the Latos trade is on hold because of medicals. Most likely having to do with the leg issue Latos had earlier this season. Similarly to Matt Kemp hip issues (which did work out), this could be a huge issue. Check back for updates.
Update: 7/29 12:45pm
Recent Developments discover that Jeff Brigham is one of the three prospects being dealt. Also, preliminary reports showing that there may be a third team involved, and this may be a much bigger trade than initially reported. Buckle up Dodger Fans.
After a stressful week of trade rumors, the Dodgers have finally made a move. The Miami Marlins have agreed to deal starting pitcher Mat Latos, Outfielder Michael Morse, and next years competitive balance draft pick (#31), in exchange for three Dodgers prospects. This move is important because it gives the Dodgers a solid back of the Rotation arm, something they have been lacking in previous years. Also, don't fret Dodger fans, this trade does not mean the Dodgers are done dealing, there are still plenty of rumors that they will get another top of the rotation arm.
Mat Latos is really the centerpiece of this deal. His stats don't look particularly strong but a closer look might tell you otherwise. Latos currently owns an ERA over 4 (4.48) which is the main reason for concern. However, his FIP (fielding independent pitching) is just 3.40 which is a very solid number, and his 2nd best since 2011. Other notes on Latos include that he has had a +1.5 mph jump in his average fastball velocity in July. Also, Latos - in July - has an impressive 1.80 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 20 innings pitched. Latos is on the up and up, and you should be excited to have him in the Dodgers Rotation.
Michael Morse was the other player in this deal, and his situation is interesting. Morse can be compared to a player like Scott Van Slyke, as he is a tall utility outfielder, that mashes righties and has trouble with lefties. Morse however, unlike Van Slyke, has moved out of the prime of his career and is struggling this season. The reason for his inclusion in this deal by the Marlins was most likely a contract dump, as he has over 15 million remaining on his deal for his two remaining years. It would not be surprising to see him get DFA'd upon or soon after his arrival to the Dodgers, with the logjam of outfielders that they have.
Other Notes on the Trade
The competitive balance draft pick that the Dodgers received from the Marlins was originally thought to be later flipped in a deal for a another SP, however, these competitive balance picks can not be traded more than once so this can be ruled out.
The dodgers prospects included in the deal have not yet been leaked. Check back for updates on who is leaving the farm.
